Algorithms

Algorithm:  A series of steps that can be followed to complete a task:

  • making toast:
    • take out bread
    • put on grill
    • put bread under grill for 2 minutes
    • turnover
    • put bread in grill for 2 minutes
    • take out
    • add butter
    • slice in 2
    • eat
  • Decomposition: breaking down the task (making toast) into a series of steps:
    • take out bread
    • put on grill
    • put bread under grill for 2 minutes
    • turnover
    • put bread in grill for 2 minutes
    • take out
    • add butter
    • slice in 2
    • eat

Abstraction

Removing unnecessary  details from a problem in order to solve it

Driving Test Software

You are a software developer that is instructed to create a software package that simulates taking a driving test in your town. You don’t have lots of money but need to create as realistic as possible. What decisions do you make?

  • the roads need to be completely accurate even with potholes
  • only the size of the roads need to be accurate
  • the main important buildings need to be created but other houses could be randomly generated
  • all traffic signs need to be created
  • only the relevant traffic signs for driving need to be created

Case Study: FIFA through the ages:

FIFA is now on 2018 version as I write this but it has changed over the years and become more realistic. The factors for this are:

  • increasing revenue from sales of the product
    • a bigger budget to create the program
    • more programmers can create better detail
    • more expensive hardware can be bought
  • increase in computer power over the years
    • more powerful hardware
    • more use of artificial intelligence

FIFA 95-2017

The following slideshow shows the progression in graphics of how sophisticated FIFA has become.

The game has always gone through abstraction (removing unnecessary detail) due to computer power and money available to develop the game.

Think of how many people pay for it now compared with 1995 when fewer people had access to computers or consoles.
